Hughes joins NBG as new MD

Independent builders merchant buying group National Buying Group has announced its new managing director.

Mark Hughes joins the group with more than 35 years’ experience in a number of senior positions with building products manufacturers. During that time, he has worked closely with independent merchants and buying groups, developing a comprehensive understanding of the construction supply chain as a result.

Hughes takes over from Nick Oates, who will step down at the end of this month following his announcement back in October 2023.

David Szymanski, Non-Executive Chairman of NBG, says the appointment demonstrates the ambition of NBG. He said: “Mark has an excellent track record within the building industry, a strong knowledge of many of our key categories and a thorough understanding of the importance of independent merchants to the construction supply chain. This is an appointment that demonstrates our ambition and one that will give both Partners and Suppliers confidence in the future of the partnership.”

Hughes said: “I’m very excited to be joining the most forward-thinking buying group working in the UK construction sector. My role is to help support our Partners to maintain and grow a buying group that is truly unique. It is thanks to our Partners that we have established such strong democratic ideals and outstanding Supplier relationships, both of which will remain key to our success moving forward.”

He will officially start his new role on Monday 18th March 2024.
