Blanchford Building Supplies, a long-standing independent builders’ merchant based in Oxfordshire, has closed its doors without warning after 87 years in business.
Founded in 1938 by brothers Fred, Cecil, and Ronald Blanchford, the company initially operated from Queen Street in central Oxford before relocating to Headington, where it remained headquartered. Over the decades, Blanchford expanded its presence with branches in Princes Risborough, Wallingford, and Bicester, serving both trade and retail customers. The company had been a member of the National Buying Group (NBG) since 2000 and employed around 80 staff.
The Blanchford brothers retired in the 1950s, handing over leadership to two long-time employees who became managing directors. Another family later joined the business, ensuring continuity of ownership for generations.
Blanchford’s last available financial report for the year ending December 31, 2023, showed a turnover of nearly £15.4 million but an operating loss of almost £700,000—significantly higher than the £71,510 loss recorded in 2022. The company attributed a 4.6% drop in turnover to intense competition from both national and local rivals. Despite having approximately £5 million in assets, it also carried £2 million in debts.
Following the closure, Blanchford’s website and social media accounts were taken down. The news shocked the local community, with many expressing their disappointment on social media. One person described the loss as “really bad news,” praising Blanchford as a “great independent builders’ merchant” known for its “straightforward pricing and great service.” Another called it a “huge loss to the local area,” while others shared nostalgic memories of visiting the store with family members.
