Building connections: building careers: building futures

One of the things that many of us love about the building materials sector is the sense of community and family – we love the people. That’s a given. In fact it’s so much given that it’s veering towards the cliché. And the people in this industry have always been incredibly generous.

The stories we cover in the pages of BMJ bear that out, none more so than the amazing reception that the launch of the Maddie Rose Foundation received. The support, donations and fundraising for the Foundation have been nothing short of incredible.

Building connections: building carers: building futures

As a byproduct of that generosity – which we would very much like to continue by the way – there’s a real opportunity right now for builders’ merchants and building material manufacturers to make a lasting impact for the future of the sector and the communities that we operate in.

We need your help with the next step… spending that money where it can make a difference.

The Foundation exists to open up our industry and inspire more young people to build careers in what is one of the most vibrant and diverse sectors out there. There are so many different career paths within building materials, and not enough young people know they exist, or how to access them.

This is where merchants and suppliers come in.

Think about your local connections: local schools? colleges? youth groups? Maybe a charity helping young people into work?

We’d love to help you help them. We can help with practical initiatives that bring the industry to life. If you want to bring young people into your business for the day to show them around, share your story, and give them a genuine feel for what a career in this sector looks like, we can help. We can also offer grants to help young people access training opportunities they otherwise couldn’t afford, as well as funding for educational resources.

We have to follow certain rules; we can only fund certain things, but we can start having the conversations, we can work out the best way of making the industry’s generosity work for the industry’s future.

The funding is there. The willingness is there. What we need now are the connections, and the people who can help us reach the young individuals who will benefit most.

So, if you want to get involved, or you have links with schools or community groups, please get in touch with the Maddie Rose Foundation and let’s talk.
