Tool maker closes after 240 years

No buyers have been found for the Cheshire tool manufacturer Caldwells manufacturing which has closed down with the loss of 28 jobs.

The Company, whose tools were used to dig such major projects as the Manchester Ship Canal lost a £1.3bn contract with Wickes and a £200,000 loan from its parent company, according to administrators from MCR. The Wickes contract reportedly accounted for some 40% of turnover.

The company manufactured shovels, hammers and forks with its shovels being used to dig trenches in the First World War.
