Paint manufacturer Crown Paints is now recycling all of the waste from its main sites.
The factories in Darwen and Hull, the mixing systems plant in Haltwhistle, Northumberland, and Crown’s 67 decorating centres in the north, now recycle or reuse 100% of their waste.
The company achieved recycling rates of 90% earlier this year, after a four-year employee-engagement programme and has been working closely with its recycling contractor to pre-treat and segregate the remaining amount, which is now composted or dealt with using other technologies including anaerobic digestion.
The remaining 66 centres in the UK and Ireland will also be sending no waste to landfill by the end of 2011.
Crown Paints sustainability manager Mark Lloyd said: “This is a fantastic achievement for the company and I am proud of all our staff for being so enthusiastic in helping us become a greener manufacturer.
“We set off on our journey to send no waste to landfill in 2008 and it has always enjoyed the full support of our senior management team. We think it is important to strive to be a sustainable business. This achievement demonstrates that we practice what we preach.”
Crown’s long-term commitment to sustainability has included mapping the carbon footprints of all 240 branded products. The company is also committed to cutting greenhouse gas emissions at sites by 10% by 2015, and by a further 15% by 2020.
