Tall ship named in honour of builders merchant

A mini tall ship at Hartlepool Marina has been named after former builders merchant, James Edwin Atkinson, whose idea it was.
The 51ft square rigger from the family of the late James Edwin Atkinson, who died two years ago after, will be turned into a sail training vessel, and will be named the James Atkinson.

The boat will have a monkey for a figurehead, a huge classroom below deck, and will give people practical hands-on experience in what is involved in sailing and square rigging, while the classroom will teach all about navigational equipment, radar and the history of Hartlepool.

It will also be used for entertainment and will sail out to meet the fleet in the Tall Ships Races next year.
