MKM driver praised for foiling thieves

Mark Church blocked the getaway car containing burglars David Redshaw and Edward Barclay as they tried to flee with £2,400 worth of central heating boilers.

The men had driven into the MKM depot in Stockton on March 15 and started loading the boilers into the back of Barclay’s van.

But when they were disturbed by a member of staff, they tried to make off in the vehicle, the Middlesbrough Evening Gazette reports.

Church sprinted towards a parked forklift truck and reversed into the van as it headed for the exit. His actions were captured on the branch’s CCTV system.

During their sentencing at Teesside Crown Court, prosecutor Christopher Attwooll, said: “They made off on foot but police were quickly on the scene and within minutes found the men on Boeing Way.”

Barclay, 23, of Hartlepool, had pleaded guilty to the burglary at an earlier hearing.

He received a 12-month jail sentence suspended for two years.
