Builders Merchant Company calls in administrators

Independent builders merchant the Builders Merchant Company has appointed Andrew Mackenzie and Laura Baxter of Begbies Traynor as joint administrators.

The merchant, which has its headquarters in Scunthorpe, and branches in Rotherham, Goole and Hull was the subject of a winding up petition last month. Administrators were appointed after attempts to sell it through the accelerated mergers and acquisitions process failed to secure a buyer. Founded in Scunthorpe in 1928, it was the largest independent timber and building supplies merchant in Lincolnshire.

In 2021, the company went through a management buyout, with the new shareholders managing director, Duncan Thomson, and financial director , Jane Thomson, of holding company Thomson Building Supplies Ltd,

All 26 employees of the BMC business have been made redundant and the aim is to sell the freehold property and assets of the business.

Mackenzie said: “Unfortunately the construction industry continues to face extremely challenging conditions and the knock-on effect of that is being felt by suppliers including Builders’ Merchant Company. We are now working hard to maximise the value of the company’s assets and ensure the best possible return for creditors.”
