Hanson to re-open Claughton brickworks

When brickmaker Hanson mothballed its Lancashire brickworks in 2010, it hoped it wasn’t going to be permanent. The company has now told the Financial Times that it plans to start making bricks at Claughton again.
The FT article (in full here) quotes Hanson spokesman David Weeks saying: “We always said when the time was right we’d go back there. We’ve looked at forward orders and talked to housebuilders and we’re pretty sure it’s a worthwhile investment.”

Brick deliveries are still below what they were at their peak six years ago, but Government figures for the three months to May 2013 show deliveries were double what they had been in the previous quarter.
