Arson suspected at merchant premises

An explosion at a disused warehouse belonging to a former builders merchants in Peterlee is being investigated as a possible arson attack.

Fire crews are investigating after an explosion at Peterlee Building Supplies, in Yoden Way, Peterlee, County Durham last night.

A loud blast was heard at around 8.30pm, when the Fire Brigade was called.

Crew manager Richard Morgan told the Peterlee Mail that when they arrived, they found a forklift truck in a derelict warehouse, the truck was powered by a gas cylinder and had been destroyed, while the roof had been blown off the building, and caved in.

The owner of the building, told the fire crew the truck had been left secure and the door was locked the last time that he left the building.

Two fire engines attended the scene and were there for two hours.

An investigation was being carried out today.
