Band of Builders, a charity which lends a helping hand to tradesmen during their time of need, developed a small extension on the front of the Dodd family’s house, with ramped access to make the property more accessible for their son, James.

Mitochondrial Disease is a life-limiting condition to which there is no cure. Having lost the use of his legs, James is now reliant on a wheelchair and walking frame.

Gavin Crane, Trustee at Band of Builders said: “For an 11-year-old, James really has been through an awful lot. Mitochondrial Disease is not only rare, but also very difficult to diagnose. James still attends mainstream school, but he can no longer hold a pencil so requires a special tablet for his schoolwork.

“Despite dealing with his illness, James is still a cheeky, funny 11-year-old. He and his family really are an inspiration to us all and we’re privileged that we could help with our first Band of Builders project of 2020. It won’t go any way to changing what this family has to go through, but it might just make things a little bit easier.

Gareth Osborne, Tarmac senior marketing manager said: “James is an inspiring young man and we were pleased to support Band of Builders in making his family home more accessible as part of on ongoing commitment to supporting local communities.

Supportiveness, trust and reliability are all part of the company’s approach and encompassed into its award winning Blue Circle  ‘One of the Family’ campaign which  gives each individual product a family characteristic that is aligned to both the product’s features and the benefits they bring to the builders who use them.
