With hundreds of product lines stocked in builders merchants, wood-based panels manufacturer Norbord realise that it’s difficult to ensure staff have detailed knowledge of every item they sell.
To address this, Norbord has a dedicated trainer who travels the length and breadth of the country to train merchant staff in branch.
The man responsible for training is product and application specialist Derek Spears, who’s based at Norbord’s South Molton factory in Devon.
As an experienced training instructor, Derek not only knows the trade but also is well-known in the industry for his warm teaching style and professional approach.
He has been with Norbord for the past 12 years, providing specialist training for Norbord’s many different customers. And, for the past two years, Derek’s focus has been on the merchant side, spending most of his time on the road. “I plan my visits according to the needs of the merchant customer”, he says.
The main purpose of the training is to educate the branch staff on the benefits to their customers of engineered wood panel products and inform them of the performance characteristics of the Norbord range. “For example, I can teach them why a particular board thickness is required for a specific application and update them on current regulations – such as the fact that now all boards for structural use must be CE-marked”, says Derek.
Derek’s training courses are available to all branch staff, yard and counter staff.
