Though those that are betray’d
Do feel the treason sharply, yet the traitor stands in worse case of woe
Shout out if you didn’t see that one coming? *tumbleweed*
Who knows what the fallout from the falling-out of The President of the United States and his former best-bud, Elon Musk, the richest man in the world will ultimately mean, but it’s been amusing to watch so far.
It was always going to happen. As we have seen so far in his presidency, Donald Trump, this time around, is only gathering around him those whom he trusts to agree with him. He doesn’t want anyone who will speak truth to power, he wants only those acolytes and sycophants that will tell him how amazing all his ideas are. That he is the chosen one, the one who will bring balance to the nation, and will Make, oh, you know the rest.
Musk was always going to get bored of tinkering around in the Oval Office, cutting budgets and jobs to save money – not even his money – when what he really wants to be doing is running the space agency.
The pair seemed to develop the bromance based on the fact that each thought the other was, by dint of their power and their riches, the coolest guy on the planet. The distance between these two and the coolest guys on the planet couldn’t been greater if they’d been blasted up in their fellow rich-bro Jeff Bezos’ unfortunately-shaped Blue Origin rocketship.
Musk took quite a lot of flack for his DOGE antics, cutting through government spending with the enthusiasm of an out-of-control threshing machine. So, I can see why he was a bit miffed with Trump trumpeting about his Big Beautiful Bill, which would add billions to the government debt that he’s just spent ages trying to reduce. Add billions by decreasing the tax burden on the wealthiest citizens, whilst limiting access for the lowest earners to public benefits programs and affordable health insurance. “One nation, conceived in liberty and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal – as long as they are rich, very rich, and, preferably, white. Abe Lincoln must be sitting very uncomfortably in his big marble chair on the National Mall. And we have seen again and again, that if Trump for one second believes anyone is not 100% on his side, then they are the enemy and he will turn on them.
Anyway, Musk has, this morning said that he regrets some of the things he said on social media last week, implying that Trump was on a list compiled by the late, not-at-all lamented sex predator Jeffrey Epstein. Yeah, you might regret it Elon, but that’s the thing with social media, once it’s out, it’s out there.
Two huge narcissistic personalities were never going to make that work, it was only a matter of time.
Talking of personalities, this weekend sees the annual get-together of the industry, when most of the great and the good gather in a spirit of true fellowship, friendship and general bonhomie. I’m done thinking about overgrown school-boy spats, I’m off to pack.
