Cemex to close Irish plant

Fifty jobs are to be lost as Cemex announce the closure of their plant in Naas, Co Kildare.
A statement, released by Cemex this morning, stated: “The current downturn within the housing sector, combined with a number of competitive pressures, has created an operating climate under which its pipes and tiles site is no longer sustainable.

Cemex added that the decision follows their recent disposal of part of the pre-cast concrete product business to Acheson & Glover.

The company has entered a thirty-day consultation period with employee representatives. Union representatives insist that the plant is still profitable.
