The Builders Merchants Federation is urging builders merchants and supplier members to write to their MPs in support of calls for a cut in the rate of VAT to 5% on building repair and maintenance work.
The proposal is part of the Get Britain Building Campaign’s 10 point manifesto and has been given a boost by EU finance minsters’ decision earlier this month to allow member states to set their own rates of VAT on certain sectors.
A letter from BMF marketing manager Christine Harding to members says: “With the EU finally voting to allow member states to introduce a reduction to 5% VAT on building repair and maintenance work, we are calling on all BMF Members to unite and lobby your MP to gain support in time for the Government to announce the VAT cut in the 22 April Budget.”
A template letter has been prepared for members use, though members are urged not to use it in its entirety, since “MP letters are best if they’re short, to the point and stress a local / constituency issue.”
Anyone wishing to use the letter template should pick no more than two or three of the points in the template letter and add, if possible, some detail about the local market or their own business and ensure it is sent on company letterhead.
“Even if you don’t have the time to personalise a letter, we urge you to take a couple of seconds to cut and paste the template on to company letterhead,” Harding stresses. “Time is of the essence now, and we really need to play the numbers game and get this issue raised at every opportunity.”
